Ancillary tasks format research : posters

ANALYSIS OF FILM POSTERS:

EVALUATION:

From carrying out analysis of these posters, I have discovered some general conventions of horror posters. These are:
  • The films title is the biggest font on the page, and the colour generally strongly contrasts the background/image behind so that it stands out. The positioning of the title on the page ,however, depends on the composition of the main poster image used.
  • Credits are always used, and are placed in the middle of the poster at the bottom of the page.
  • There is normally some text about key selling points for the film. This includes things such as 'From the producers of' and 'Staring', because they give the film selling power if they are associated with other successful films / producers / famous actors.
  • Horror posters use images that clearly show the genre. This can be shown through things such as blood, death or general fears that people have.
  • The release date is also normally on the poster, however I have noticed that sometimes the posters just say 'coming soon' because it is an early advertising campaign or the designer wants the viewers to keep track on the film so that they can find out when it will be released.
  • The model in the posters is either the bad person in the film, or the most vulnerable. If it is the most vulnerable, then the viewer can empathise with the model. Although if it is the bad character / part of the film (such as the demon) then the main theme of the film is introduced straight away.
These are just a few of the main conventions I found in horror posters  and I will try to use them when constructing my poster.
